Teaching and Learning at Horizons
At Horizons College, every student deserves access to highly effective teaching that helps them achieve their potential. Our approach is grounded in two key foundations:
- Science of Learning (Cognitive Science)
Our approach is underpinned by the Science of Learning — the research into how the brain processes and retains knowledge. We know that learning happens when students actively think, practise, and receive timely feedback. Our teachers use clear explanations, scaffolding, and strategies like retrieval practice and spaced review to help students remember and apply their learning over time.
- Trauma-Informed Practice
Many Horizons students have experienced challenges in their schooling journey. We create classrooms that feel safe, supportive, and respectful, where students know mistakes are part of learning. Strong relationships and consistent routines give every learner a sense of belonging and confidence.
What this looks like in our classrooms
- Teachers use explicit teaching and the “I do, we do, you do” approach to model and guide new learning.
- We embed checks for understanding (mini whiteboards, questioning, exit tickets) so no student is left behind.
- Lessons include opportunities for retrieval practice and review, strengthening memory and long-term success.
- Classrooms are calm, predictable, and inclusive, helping students stay focused and engaged.
